- Rod Carew was born on a
- train in the Panama Canal
- Zone. Eventually, he and
- his mother moved to New
- York City. At age 18, one
- day after graduating from high school in 1964,
- he signed with the Minnesota Twins.

- After three years in the minors, Rod made it
- to the big club in 1967. He batted .292 and
- was named the American League Rookie of
- the Year. Two seasons later, he led the
- league with a .332 batting average. That was
- the first of 15 straight years in which he
- batted .300 or more!

- In 1977, his best season, Rod batted .388
- -- more than 50 points higher than
